Periodontal Conditions

Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is a progressive condition that's exceedingly common – in fact, some 80% of American adults have some form of periodontal condition. Gum problems are caused by bacteria that build up on teeth and along the gum line. Periodontal disease varies widely in severity, with the mildest forms of the condition causing little more than bad breath while the most severe forms can cause serious damage to the soft tissue, teeth, and jawbones, posing a serious threat to the health of your teeth and smile. Periodontal disease is divided into two main stages, each with unique symptoms and treatment recommendations.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the mildest form of gum disease and is how all periodontal disease starts. Gingivitis begins when plaque and bacteria are left on the teeth for too long, eventually causing inflammation in the gums. The most common symptoms of gingivitis are swollen, red, inflamed gums that may bleed easily when flossed. Gingivitis is a mild condition that can be reversed with a rigorous oral hygiene regimen – but if left alone, it can develop into the more serious condition of periodontitis.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is the second stage of gum disease, and it poses a serious threat to the teeth and gums. In periodontitis, the gums will often pull away from the teeth, forming "pockets" that are usually infected with bacteria. Acids released by these bacteria, along with the enzymes released by the body in trying to fight this bacteria, can begin to degrade the bones, ligaments, and connective tissues that hold the teeth in place. Left alone, periodontitis can cause severe gum recession, bone loss, and even lost teeth. Periodontitis is a serious condition that requires professional treatment – and we're here to help.

Preventing & Treating Gum Disease

Prevention is the best way to fight gum disease, and the key is a strong, diligent oral hygiene regimen. At a minimum, you should brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily. Minimizing your intake of sugar and carb-heavy foods is another great way to protect your teeth. If you do develop gum disease, our periodontist, Dr. Alex Lopez, can help. Dr. Lopez is an expert in periodontics who's helped countless patients reverse gum disease and reclaim a beautiful, healthy smile.
