The Importance of Dental Hygiene
When it comes to your teeth and your smile, there's one thing that's more important than anything else for maintaining a healthy mouth: dental hygiene. Without a diligent, rigorous oral hygiene regimen, your teeth are in serious danger from bacteria, plaque, and dental decay – a road that eventually leads to cavities, gum disease, and even tooth and jawbone loss. Why? The problem starts with bacteria.
Plaque: The Enemy of Your Smile
Everyone has naturally-occurring bacteria in the mouth, and while some of those bacteria are "good" for your teeth, others pose a danger. When some bacteria come into contact with sugars and carbohydrates in food, they break them down into acids that eat away at tooth enamel. Left on their own, these bacteria form into plaque, a sticky biofilm that bonds to teeth and slowly produces tooth-corroding acids. Over time, the acids can break through the enamel to form a cavity, infect the gums and cause gum disease, and even rot away teeth and bones altogether.
Maintaining Proper Oral Hygiene
Thankfully, stopping dental decay is as easy as maintaining a proper oral hygiene routine. Oral hygiene is your defense against plaque, and it helps to clean your mouth of damaging acids and bacteria. There are a few foundational pillars of a strong oral hygiene regimen:
- Brushing: One of the most important elements of oral hygiene, brushing is your first line of defense against damage. You should brush your teeth using fluoridated toothpaste twice a day; once after breakfast and once before bed.
- Flossing: No oral hygiene routine is complete without flossing. You should floss once per day after brushing, taking care to thoroughly clean every tooth.
- Diet: Food also plays a role in your dental health. To protect your teeth, you should avoid foods that are highly acidic or full of sugar, as these can damage teeth. Instead, stick with healthy foods like vegetables and low-fat cheeses.
- Regular Teeth Cleanings & Appointments: In addition to the care you provide at home, it's important to visit our office regularly. Upon evaluation, if in good oral health, you should have your teeth cleaned at least twice per year. If you notice anything that looks or feels like a cavity or problem such as bleeding gums, we encourage you to be proactive in contacting us. Our dentists will recommend the proper intervals for evaluations, and every patient’s situation can differ on a case by case basis.
