A popular question asked of Dr. Craig A. Israel
when people are considering dental implants but unfamiliar with the process is: is it painful? It’s usual for patients to wonder if implant placement is more painful than tooth extraction. While the answer may vary since people have different pain tolerances and go through different processes, most patients report feeling less discomfort during implant surgery than in extraction procedures.
Restorative Dentistry In Santa Monica, CA
Naturally, dental implant procedures are surgery, and all surgical procedures do deal with some level of pain and discomfort. However, since anesthesia is used during implant procedures, the majority of our patients experience minimal discomfort during simple implant placement. Patients who need bone grafts or other supplemental procedures, however, may experience a higher level of discomfort than the average implant patient.
To minimize uneasiness for each patient, Dr. Israel will consider these factors as he plans anesthesia. Anesthesia may be general or local, according to the treatment needed. Dr. Israel and his staff is well versed with oral and IV sedation methods, which is regularly used in patients who are nervous or anxious about their dental implant procedure.
What Happens After Dental Implants Are Placed?
Pain and discomfort after the placement of dental implants is similar to other common dental treatments. Since small punctures are made to the gums during treatment, there may be slight bleeding at the implant site immediately following the procedure. As anesthesia dies down, usually within two hours, some soreness may follow. It is understood that generic pain medications, such as ibuprofen, are sufficient to minimize post-implant irritation.
Keep in mind that each experience will be unique depending on the person and procedure. This is why Dr. Israel creates tailored treatment plans for every patient that walks in his office. The truth is that many patients who have dental implants are pleased when the procedure turns out to be easier and less painful than they expected.
