One of the ways that you can help protect the health and appearance of your teeth is by avoiding teeth staining foods and habits. As your dental health advisors, we’d like to take this opportunity to explain some of the foods and habits that may end up staining your teeth.

Teeth Staining Foods

If you feel like your smile isn’t quite as bright as you’d like it to be, it may be because of some of the foods that you’ve been eating. Many foods and beverages have the tendency to stain a person’s teeth and make them lose their luster. Some of these foods that have staining potential include:

  • Berries
  • Pasta sauce
  • Tomatoes
  • Citrus fruit
  • Curry
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Red wine
  • Soda
  • Sports drinks
  • Energy drinks

Teeth Staining Habits

While there are unfortunately many foods that can stain your teeth, often what happens is that a person’s bad habits are just as big of a contributor to his or her teeth becoming stained. If you want to lessen the chances of staining your teeth, we recommend doing the following:

Use a straw if you’re going to consume an acidic or sugary beverage. The straw will allow the drink to bypass your teeth and avoid staining it.

  • Brush after you eat as often as you can.
  • Use mouthwash to rinse your mouth.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Visit the dentist for a professional cleaning twice a year.
