Should I Use Mouthwash?

by Best Natural Smile on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 2:00 PM

Who doesn't love that minty fresh feeling that comes from a swig of mouthwash? Using a mouthwash can be advantageous in many ways, and in today’s market there is a multitude of mouthwashes to choose from. Most brands claim using a mouth rise can zap plaque and kill bacteria like no other form of hygiene regimen. Read on as we explore the realities of mouthwash.

While there are benefits associated with using mouthwash, one thing your Santa Monica, CA dentist will certainly tell you is that mouthwash should never be used as a substitute for brushing and flossing. It's also important to note that mouthwash does not have to be used at all if you are diligent with oral hygiene and are not at risk for gum disease. Here are a few tips about mouthwash that you may find helpful.

Selecting a Mouthwash

If you decide to add mouthwash to your oral hygiene routine, be sure to select one that carries the American Dental Association or ADA Seal of Acceptance. This will ensure that the product you choose is safe and approved.

It's best to use a mouthwash that doesn't contain alcohol. The reason being that alcohol evaporates the saliva in your mouth, which protects your mouth from bad bacteria. In addition, a lack of moisture in your mouth is actually the main cause of bad breath.

The most popular mouthwash brands are Listerine, Colgate, Oral B, Scope and Dently pH. It’s smart to choose a mouthwash that meets your needs and a flavor that you like. If you're cavity-prone or don't get enough fluoride in your drinking water, use a mouthwash that contains fluoride to strengthen tooth enamel and make your teeth less susceptible to decay.

For those with gingivitis or gum disease, use an antibacterial mouthwash such as Listerine antiseptic mouthwash; this will reduce the levels of harmful bacteria in your oral cavity. Since antibacterial ingredients are not compatible with fluoride, steer clear of all-in-one mouthwashes.

The Right Way To Use Mouthwash

In order for mouthwash to work effectively, take a capful (or whatever dose is recommended on the package) and hold the mouthwash in your mouth for at least 30 seconds while swishing it around and gargling it at the back of your throat. Then, simply spit the mouthwash out. Even if you feel like rinsing your mouth out with water when you're done, you should skip rinsing to allow the mouthwash to finish its job.
